Obesity in today’s children is an increasingly glaring problem in the MS Delta. Community efforts are needed as well as individual family commitments to eat healthy foods and engage physical activity. The American Academy of Pediatrics advocates the 5-2-1-0 Rule as guidelines to keep children healthy.
5: Eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
2: Limit Screen Time (TV, computer, and video games) to 2 hours a day maximum.
1: Engage in physical activity at least one hour daily.
0: Limit sweet drinks to none. Even 100% fruit juice has its pitfalls; children can fill up on sugar and calories with juice and not get their needed nutrients from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, and dairy. Children ages one-six should not drink more than 4-6 ounces of juice a day. Children ages seven and up should not drink more than 8- 12 ounces of juice daily.
