More Child Development by Karen Matthews

In our continuing series of child development tips during 13-24 months, language and literacy are developed at this time by using a mixture of gestures, sounds and words. Two word sentences should become common and most children will learn  about 200 words this year. Read stories with your child every day! This takes 5 minutes but will be the most important time you spend today. Ask your son or daughter about pictures in the storybooks ” Who is this?” ” What is that?” relate events in a book to personal experiences, ” Does our cat act like the cat in this story?” Encourage her to talk.  If comfortable, hold her on your lap while you read.  This is what your child’s brain needs to properly development.  And the rewards are endless.
