Delta Health Alliance Receives $200,000 Grant from ACE Awareness Foundation to open Universal Parenting Place in Leland
Delta Health Alliance will cut the ribbon on June 1 at 10:00AM to open the Delta’s first Universal Parenting Place (UPP) in the newly renovated wing of the Leland Medical Clinic. The UPPs are revolutionary facilities designed to provide free resources for parents and guardians that bolster the emotional wellbeing of families. The site is made possible thanks to a grant from Memphis-based ACE Awareness Foundation.
Karen Matthews, Delta Health Alliance CEO, explains the role of a UPP site, “First off, it is safe and secure space for parents to use with their children. They can talk, read books, do homework, play games or watch a movie. It will be a great place to simply relax with your children. Second, because licensed counselors will staff the center throughout the day, parents will have access to professionals to help with questions or challenges they may have, no matter how large or small. The center will be a great place to pick up tips on parenting.”
According to Matthews, the center will be open 5 days a week, professional staff will be available whenever the center is open, and there is no need to make an appointment. “The center is offered to all in the community, no matter anyone’s income. Simply come on in,” said Matthews.
UPP sites are dedicated to delivering practical information, guidance, and emotional support for family-related issues or concerns. In addition to one-on-one parenting counseling, there are often therapeutic regularly scheduled open group sessions.
“Our goal is to support families in their efforts to prevent adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) which can have a lasting negative impact for children and their future wellbeing,” said Ellen Rolfes, executive director of the ACE Awareness Foundation. “By partnering with Delta Health Alliance to open an UPP site at the Leland Medical Clinic, parents and guardians in the Delta now can receive judgement free, no cost parenting support to help them navigate difficult, stressful situations.”
Delta Health Alliance and ACE Awareness will be partnering with local organizations such as the Delta Arts Alliance to bring family activities to the UPP Center. The Center will be operational during the hours of 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
“The pediatrician’s office is the place to go for children’s physical health, while the UPPs offer help for parents and caretakers who have concerns about their children’s emotional and behavioral health,” added Rolfes.
