Leland Medical Clinic announces exciting new improvements
(Leland, MS) – A number of officials and health care providers helped break ground today on a $1.2 million renovation that Delta Health Alliance announced for its Leland Medical Clinic. The work is being funded with a grant from the US Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Office. The renovation will expand the clinic, upgrade equipment and improve patient waiting areas and examination rooms.
At today’s ceremony, clinic officials announced that Neal Suares, M.D. is joining the staff as Medical Director. Dr. Suares is also in private practice at Gamble Brothers Clinic in Greenville and has full hospital privileges at Delta Regional Medical Center. He currently serves on the Foundation Board of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians.
“Once the renovation is complete, Leland Medical Clinic will be able to provide more services and opportunities for our patients,” remarked Karen Matthews, Delta Health Alliance CEO. In addition to Dr. Matthews’ efforts, MS State Representative Willie Bailey, Delta Health Alliance Board member, has been instrumental in the process. According to Bailey, “We are appreciative of USDA Rural Development to ensure that Delta residents receive quality health care in a quality facility. USDA is always supportive of bettering the Delta.” Newly planned and expanded services will include an upgraded exercise room for patients, a new pediatric examination room, x-ray services, and an additional waiting room.
The Leland Medical Clinic is one of only two facilities in the Delta that has received the designation as a Patient Centered Medical Home. As Daniel Thomas, clinic director, explained, “As a medical home clinic, we practice a model of care that strengthens the provider-patient relationship through coordinated care and a long-term healing relationship is the standard by which the staff operates.” In addition to medical services, patients will have access to dietary services, exercise and physical fitness and patient education – all components will be housed in the renovated clinic facility.
Leland Medical Clinic, originally the Leland City Hospital, has been a fixture for patient care since its opening in June 1957. Since 2013, Delta Health Alliance has owned and fully operated Leland Medical providing a medical home for Delta residents.
DHA has contracted with Beard & Riser Architects and Kenneth R. Thompson, Jr. Builder, Inc., both of Greenwood to ensure that the renovation will meet the needs of the patient population served at the clinic. Completion of the project and a grand opening is targeted for May 2016.
Leland Medical Clinic is in full operation in a portable building on the clinic grounds until renovations are completed.
