Parents as Teachers

Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a program offered in both the Deer Creek and Indianola Promise Communities. PAT serves expectant mothers and new parents and their families from pregnancy through kindergarten by offering support, health, and education services. Trained staff visit with parents and families one-on-one in their homes to promote healthy living and self-sufficiency, listen to parents’ concerns, educate them about nutrition, model positive parenting practices, and link families to appropriate medical and social services. Regular group meetings between parent participants allow parents to connect and share their experiences. To child participants, PAT provides periodic developmental assessments at frequencies dependent upon the child’s age. Through personal involvement and on-the-ground intervention, PAT seeks to improve health outcomes and child development for families in the Mississippi Delta.
