Since joining the Delta Blues Diabetes Initiative in June 2022, Shelly Allen has experienced remarkable improvements in her health, including a 4.6% decrease in her A1C levels. Her inspiring story is a testament to the power of determination, education, and the personalized support provided by the program. “Being a part of this program has really encouraged my spirit to pull away from all of the eating I was doing, and it encouraged me to want to see myself get better and do better,” Shelly shares.
Shelly credits much of her success to the resources and encouragement she received from Lesa Wise, the Associate Vice President of Clinical Programs at Leland Medical Clinic. “When I would come into the office to see Lesa, what really motivated me was when she began to give me the diabetic cookbooks and different recipes to follow. I began to follow some of them, and that is really when I began to see results and feel better,” Shelly explains. “I told myself if these people are willing to push to help me, I’ve got to be willing to try to help myself.”
The Delta Blues Diabetes Initiative is a comprehensive program that focuses on managing the “ABCs” of diabetes: A1C, blood pressure, and cholesterol. “Our goal is to help participants strive to lower these three ABCs through diet and lifestyle changes, exercise, and other educational means to help them live healthier lives,” according to Wise.
Shelly’s journey is a shining example of what can be achieved when individuals commit to improving their health with the support of a caring and knowledgeable team. Through the Delta Blues Diabetes Initiative, Shelly has transformed her physical health and embraced a more empowered and hopeful outlook on life.
